Motherhood comes with a lot of challenges, it is not at all easy and can take a toll on new mothers' mental and physical health. Breastfeeding is the most important, and intimate journey that every new mother embarks upon. While it is a natural process, it can also present a range of challenges Sore or flat nipples, low milk supply, and engorged breasts are common hurdles faced by breastfeeding mothers, but with the right strategies and support, You can actually have the good and smooth breastfeeding journey with your little one
In the early days of breastfeeding, as I and my baby were still learning, improper latch and my baby's habit of suckling led to sore and cracked nipples. Painful feeding, and deep cracks in my nipples caused blood while latching, which was so unhygienic for my baby. Doctors strictly said no to direct breastfeeding. I was shunned at the thought that I could not feed my daughter and make that beautiful bond with my little one to cherish forever.
10 Things That I Tried to Make My Breastfeeding Easy
Painful breastfeeding led to a chain of other challenges for me: breast engorgements, painful breast pumping, and so on. But my Lactation consultant helped me break out of this cycle of painful breastfeeding and breast engorgement.
With her guidance, I followed a few things that really helped me overcome the problem.
Things I did for my sore and cracked nipples
- Applying lanolin-based or medical-grade nipple creams after each feeding can provide relief and promote healing. Make sure to wipe off excess cream before the next feeding.
- Allowing your nipples to air-dry after feeding can aid in preventing moisture buildup, which can contribute to soreness.
- Experimenting with different breastfeeding positions can help reduce pressure on specific areas of your nipples, giving them time to heal.
- Using nipple shields to feed the happy really helped me, as my breasts had enough time to heal.
- Applying coconut oil/ or clarified butter/ ghee helped me in moisturizing my dry cracked nipples.
- Proper hydration is essential for maintaining skin health. Drinking ample water can aid in preventing dryness and cracking of nipple skin.
- Despite painful pumping, I started pumping religiously every 2-3 hours to maintain an apt milk supply.
Things I did for my Engorged breast
Engorgement occurs when the breasts become overly full, often making them painful and difficult for the baby to latch onto. Here's how to find relief from engorged breasts:
- Allow your baby to nurse frequently to help empty the breasts and relieve engorgement.
- Applying warm compresses to the breasts before feeding or pumping can help improve milk flow and ease discomfort.
- After feeding, applying cold compresses can reduce swelling and provide relief.
- Gently massaging and hand expressing a small amount of milk before feeding can soften the areola, making it easier for your baby to latch.
After 2 months of non-stop practice, prayers, and faithfulness to each other I was able to successfully directly feed my daughter despite those challenges. However, with the right guidance, support, and perseverance, these challenges can be overcome. Remember that seeking help from lactation consultants, healthcare providers, and experienced breastfeeding mothers can provide valuable insights and encouragement. Every breastfeeding journey is unique, and with patience and care, you can navigate these obstacles and create a fulfilling and memorable experience for both you and your baby.
