Just as Valentine's Day reminds us to cherish our loved ones a little more, Earth Day is a reminder to dedicate our time and energy to solving climate change and other environmental issues. The inaugural Earth Day took place in 1970 and was initiated by Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. Nelson, who had been concerned about environmental issues for several years, wanted to raise public awareness and educate people about the importance of taking care of our planet.
April 22, 2023, marks the 53rd anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement. Earth Day brings the world together to celebrate, and it’s the perfect time to educate kids about climate change and how they can work to protect their homes, EARTH. Take Action. Be a part of the green revolution and act responsibly on this earth day.
There are lots of ways teachers and parents can motivate kids into caring for our planet. What better way to help your children foster an empathetic relationship with our planet — than by celebrating Earth Day together with some fun and crafty activities?
Grow a love for plants with seed jars -
In case you can't plant a tree in your garden because of space issues, you can plant seeds in mason jars available in your kitchen. Generate love for plants from a jar, later you can encourage your younger one to plant saplings in the garden.
Teach students/children to recycle and Reuse
Show kids how to separate plastics, metals, cardboard, and glass. Ask them to place each type of recyclable into separate bins. Reinforce these skills throughout the year at lunchtime, or whenever students have recyclables. Color segregation works best with younger children who can't read.
Instead of buying brand-new remote control cars for children, Go for second-hand options available in the market. Invest in toys or clothes that can be used and worn multiple times.
Make cloth bag
Boycott regular plastic bags, If you cannot delete them completely from your life, you can at least make one cloth bag at home to carry along to buy your groceries or stationary. Kids will love making their own cloth bag with old pieces of cloth, pair of jeans, or a cushion cover.

Time to make a bird feeder
What's the best way to rekindle the love for the earth, and nature than igniting the love for other living beings? Let's make our own bird feeders using reusable items from the kitchen to reduce waste and help hungry birds at the same time. Hit two targets with one arrow.
Teach How to Compost
Teachers can do with their students, and parents of course can do the same with their kids at home.
What to do:
- Put the bin outdoors on top of the soil under the sun. Top up with kitchen waste.
- Kitchen waste with a layer of soil.
- Cover with a lid and the old rug.
- Continue to add kitchen waste to the compost. From time to time, be sure to turn over the compost with a shovel as it decomposes.
Upcycle plastic and metal
All must have taught their children about RECYCLING, It's time to do some actual action. Use old plastic bottles, and metallic jars for decorating them and using them as pen holders, or DIY piggy banks.
Go paperless!
Reduce the usage of paper at home, and school. Use slates, chalk old school method or you may use markers and boards to practice writing with kids. Use reusable flashcards in school. Promote digital books if possible and if your resources may allow.
Throw an eco-friendly party
Sounds so enticing right? Why only do we have Halloween, and Christmas parties, but we can celebrate earth day too, just like your Birthdays. Keep an eco-friendly theme, where you can gift planters or saplingsas a return favor. Use nonplastic cutlery. Watch natural documentaries, andPlan a natural excursion to the zooto foster love among other living beings of nature.
Take an Earth Day pledge
Make a list of the things kids would like to do to maintain the health of our environment:
- Carry a handkerchief from home every time, and stop using paper napkins.
- Turn off lights that don't need to be on
- Use cloth grocery bags instead of plastic ones
- Try shampoo bars instead of the bottled variety
- Donate clothes, stationery, and toys.
- Don't buy unnecessary plastic toys
- Lower your carbon footprint by reducing trash output
- Segregate Dry and wet waste
- Spend more time outside than playing video games indoors
- Use energy-efficient LED bulbs -- they last much longer than traditional bulbs
MOMS TIP - Buy Things that can be used in multiple ways.
Investing in LEGO and BLOCKS is worth it. They can be used multiple times and will stay with your child for the long run. Stop buying those one-time peppy dancing toys for your toddler. They are of no use, plus they add to the waste on our planet.
Take Action. Be a part of the green revolution and act responsibly on this earth day. Keep the Earth Clean and Green. Nurture the Nature. Go Green and Save Green.
